The shore crab is a relatively small crab known for its very rich flavor. Because these crabs are both flavorful and affordable, they are excellent as a base for soups and sauces. This crab contains relatively high amounts of protein, but low amounts of fat and carbohydrates. At De Meulemeester, we supply these crabs frozen and packed in 5 kg boxes.

Origin
Our shore crabs originate exclusively from the Netherlands, but they can be found throughout almost all of Europe. Nowadays, they even occur on the east coast of Canada and the United States. In those areas, the shore crab is considered an invasive species because they cause significant nuisance there and have no natural predators. They cut through seaweed, degrade water quality by churning up the seabed, and dig burrows in the banks, resulting in unstable shorelines and dikes.
Other information
Shore crabs molt and reproduce in the summer. Despite this, fishing for this species takes place year-round, ensuring the product is available all year round.
