Product information
The king crab is one of the largest crustaceans in the world, with a leg span that can reach nearly 2 meters. It is a species of crab native to cold water. We supply this crab both fresh and frozen, ranging from raw to cooked products. The raw king crab has a creamy white underside and a brown top. During the cooking process, this brown turns red, which is where the red king crab gets its name from. Additionally, this crab is particularly rich in protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, B12, antioxidants, and minerals such as iron and iodine.

Origin
The king crab is found primarily in the Bering Sea, the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, around the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia), and in the waters of Alaska. At De Meulemeester, we import king crabs from Norway and Russia. The fishery for the red king crab is regulated by quotas along the east coast of Finnmark (towards Nordkapp), but west of Nordkapp, there are no quotas. This arrangement is deliberate to prevent the crab from spreading further along the coastline into important feeding grounds for other fish species.
Other information
The Norwegian red king crab can be caught virtually all year round. The only exception is the month of April: this is a protection period during which fishing is prohibited due to the red king crab's molting.
