Product information
The whelk is a characteristic shellfish with a sturdy, thick, and spiral shell. The color varies from beige and brownish-orange to greenish and gray-white shades. The inside of the oval shell opening has a light yellowish-white color.
The flesh of the whelk is white in color, sometimes with small black speckles, and has a firm texture and a distinctly salty taste. The shell averages about 5.5 centimeters in length, but large specimens can reach a length of up to 10 centimeters.
The grooves in the shell are characteristic. These develop during the growth of the whelk and can provide information about the age and development of the animal.

Origin
De Meulemeester's whelks originate from France. Whelks naturally live along the Atlantic coast and in the North Sea, among other places, and have a preference for cold water. They feel at home on sandy, silty, and rocky bottoms, where they spend a large part of their time buried.
The whelk is a predator and feeds primarily on other mollusks. It moves across the seabed using its muscular foot.
Other information
Whelks are caught year-round and are therefore available from January through December. They have a shelf life of approximately five days.
In France, the whelk is known as 'bulot' and is a classic feature on a seafood platter. In Belgium, whelks are also called 'caracollen'.
Whelks are traditionally cooked in a seasoned broth. Their firm texture and pronounced flavor make them a characteristic shellfish.
